Resplendent Quetzal Tour
The resplendent quetzal is one of the most sought after birds in birding and photography. Their vibrant plumage and elegant long elegant tails make for magnificent photos and memories.
This elusive birds are only found in the cloud forests of Central America. While they are able to be seen year round, the best time to see them is during breeding season, which can start as early as February and end as late as May. This is due to the fact that they nest inside of dead trees and that much of their time is spent in same area preparing the nest, incubating the eggs, hunting for food, and caring for the offspring. This also makes them an easy target for unethical guides. Many of which will engage in a number of behaviors that have negative impacts on the quetzals.
Imitating songs and calls, hitting the nest tree to scare them out, letting guests crowd the nest and the surrounding trees they use for perching are all utilized by unethical guides. Behavior like this can lead the chicks being left unprotected and killed by predators and also cause the quetzal to abandon the nest.
